VOIP Recorder

Troubleshooting FAQs

Can Anyone Else Access My Recordings?

Absolutely Not! With VOIP Recorder, your computer does the recording itself on your hard drive and only people with access to your computer can hear the results. There are competing Internet based services where you dial the special service number before dialing the real phone number and then your call flows through that third party for recording and your call is stored on the Internet. VR believes your data should never be shared with any 3rd party service - including us!

How Do I Know VR Is Ready To Record?

The "VOIP Recorder Status" box on the At-A-Glance tab of the web console will say "OK- Phone Activity Is Detected". It can take as much as one minute after starting VR for this to happen. If you do not get an OK status then mail vr-support@penbaynetworks.com for help.

Do I put the Vonage ATA before or after my Home Router?

Your computer and the ATA must both be directly connected to the same Internet Home router. That means the blue port WAN port of the ATA should be plugged into a LAN port of the home internet router, as should your computer. Nothing should be plugged into the yellow LAN port of the ATA. See this diagram for more help.

I am ready to Buy a License. How do I do it?

Terrific! Go to http://www.penbaynetworks.com/MyAccount/purchase.php.

I lost my License Key

When you purchase a new license it is mailed to you. PenBay networks also keeps a record of this license key and it always appears on the My Account page of www.penbaynetworks.com.

What is that Recurring Staccato Beep I Hear?

You are probably using a demonstration license. If it is a frequent series of 3 staccato beeps then it is the "demo nag sound". The nag sound is only heard on the local end of the phone, and it does not appear on the recordings. Check if the web console says "DEMO" across the top in big red letters in order to confirm. To make the nagging stop, just setup your license key on the configuration tab of the web console. License keys are available for sale on the My Account tab of the www.penbaynetworks.com if you do not have one already.

I signed up for an account, but I have not received my login credentials in e-mail. Help!

Check your spam folder. Especially if you are using Yahoo! for your e-mail. Yahoo! miscategorizes a lot of legitimate mail as spam. If you still haven't found it after a few minutes then drop a line to vr-support@penbaynetworks.com with your problem. We can generally see your mail even if you cannot see ours. We will write back from another server which has a better chance of going through. If all else fails, sign up with a gmail address. Gmail has proven quite reliable.

Can I place the ATA in the DMZ?

No. The ATA and your computer must both be attached to the LAN behind your router. While an ATA in the DMZ is physically cabled that way, it is logically routed as if it were on the Internet side of your router. In that configuration your computer is not able to see any of the VOIP traffic it needs to record. If you desire the DMZ due to problems getting your ATA to work behind the firewall, try port forwarding or port triggering.

What is the URL of the VR Web Console?

http://localhost:11500/. It is only active if you are currently running VOIP Recorder. On Windows there is a VR icon on the systray whenever you are running the program - clicking on that icon will also launch the console.

What is the latest version of VR and where do I get it?

The latest version you are signed up to download is always available on the My Account tab of the PenBay Networks website at http://www.penbaynetworks.com/MyAccount/.

I cannot get Status OK on the At-A-Glance tab, any other hints?

Log in to your Internet Router and look for any options regarding SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) or dynamic arp inspection and disable them.

What Happens If I Start VR While a Call is Active?

There is no problem starting VR while calls are currently active. However currently active calls will not be recorded.

What Happens If I Shutdown VR While a Call is Active?

The currently active call is unfortunately terminated - though the portion before shutting down is successfully recorded.

Can I Run VR as a Windows Background Service Without Logging In?

At this time VOIP Recorder only runs as an application. This is a design decision due that ensures you are always aware you are running VOIP Recorder.

Why Does Windows Refuse to Shutdown With VR Running?

Shutting your computer down while VR is re-routing calls through your computer can result in an outage of phone service for a few minutes. To prevent this, VR refuses to let Windows shutdown while VR is still running. To shutdown VR just right click on the systray icon.
The VR shutdown process takes a few moments longer than is alloted to programs when you click the windows shutdown button. This is why it has to refuse the operating system level shutdown if VR is still running.
On windows, right-click on the VR systray icon in order to shutdown VOIP Recorder.

What is the PenBay Networks Privacy Policy?

We are committed to your privacy.
First, none of your calls ever go through PenBay Networks servers. VR only uses your computer and hard drive. So we cannot share any of your call data with anyone because we simply do not have it. Furthermore we will not share your email address with anyone else outside of a legal requirement to do so, and we do not have any other information about you to share in any way.

Can I Opt-Out of E-Mails?

Yes. There is an opt-out check box at http://www.penbaynetworks.com/MyAccount/.

Can I Use VR with a VOIP Service other than Vonage?

Right now we only support and test with Vonage. However we have had positive reports of a couple other VOIP Services. You're welcome to try the Demo - we'd love to hear how it goes, but we cannot provide real support for those configurations. This might change in the future.

Does VR Support Windows 7?

Yes! As of release 1B0. We also support Vista, XP, 2000, OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and a variety of Linux releases.
