VOIP Recorder

Linux Install Guide

VOIP Recorder for Linux is supported on either Gnome or KDE. We must admit that Linux is our favorite development platform and we are happy to provide full functionality for it. The binaries in the install package are for 32 bit Intel x86. Most folks are either running in 32 bit mode or have 32 bit compatibility libraries installed so we have kept the distribution limited to that format for simplicity's sake. If you absolutely require a 64 bit build let us know at vr-support@penbaynetworks.com.

The voiprecorder-installer-linux.tgz file is a compressed tar file that may be unpackaged in a terminal by typing "tar xfz voiprecorder-installer-linux.tgz". A directory called "voiprecorder" is formed as a result of that command. Inside you will find the executable, "vr", along with some libraries and a little bit of open-source software including a description of your rights with respect to that software.

The voiprecorder folder may be stored anywhere. Your home directory or /var/lib are common choices. The audio data will be stored inside that directory.

The "vr" executable must be run as root. VOIP Recorder uses Linux packet sockets to do its work and those require root privileges. The program runs inside the terminal and waits for you to press any key to terminate it. Primary interaction with it is through the cross-platform web console on port 11500 of your computer. The program also logs some interesting extra data to the terminal if you are interested.

You should always shutdown VOIP Recorder before turning off your computer or logging out. Failure to do so could result in a short interruption in your phone service. The Vonage™ ATA will figure out your computer's absence after just a few minutes and things service repair itself but it is best to shut the softwares down normally to prevent that. Any calls currently in progress when VR is shutdown will be interrupted, but the phone should otherwise resume working immediately. A call that was started before VOIP recorder was booted will not be recorded.

Using the web console is the same for all platforms: Windows, Mac, and Linux. See the general Operation Guide for instructions on how to use the console. The web console is on port 11500 of localhost. The default username is "admin" and the default password is "default". Do not type the quotation marks.
